Becoming an owner of business before you hit 30 is hard enough. Becoming a successful marketing influencer at that age is even harder. It is something a few have achieved even at forty. One of the few that have achieved the incredible feat is Erik Huberman who founded and is the CEO of Hawke Media. He has also been a leader who has been nurturing several companies in their growth phase.
Erik recently shared some of the secrets that helped him grow his agency along with his wins and failures along the way to the point that he has reached in the interview below.
What is that skill that has helped you move your agency ahead when you are this young?
Erik: I get things done when they should be done. I came to realize that people who are fast at executing their tasks when due and completing them fast have a higher chance of succeeding than people who do not. With this knowledge in place, I come up with a list of things that I want to be done. I add new tasks to the list as they come and do it immediately. I then check off items that I have completed. It may sound simply than it is to do on the ground but I have become obsessed with ensuring that tasks are completed on time.
What is the particular thing that you wished you knew before founding Hawke Media?
Hawke has been great for the period we have been there. I am fortunate to have several skills within myself and partner with people who complement the skills that I lack. However, the biggest challenge that I have met in running the business is the inability to scale my sales piece.
None of the people at Hawke media had worked with a B2B (business-to-business) company before joining Hawke. Thus, we are forced to tangle with several ideas to get things going. However, we have our eyes on the challenges and try to deal with it as it comes.
What is the most critical system that you put in place for the success of the agency?
At Hawke, Media culture is our top priority. We look at three main things when hiring staff.
- We look for a candidate that is not hesitant to work hard and knows how to ensure that things get done.
- Someone that has a high aptitude and one that can learn very fast
- Someone who has a high EQ. A person that you would love to hang out with and take a drink together
We do not skip any of the above requirements, as each is as important as the others are. This has helped us build a team of high energetic, bright, hardworking, and pleasant members. That is one of our secrets.
What is the biggest challenge that you did face but had not expected to face?
Having unreliable people. Despite being an optimist and figuring out a hiring policy and company culture, we got many people who were flaky and could not hold the ball. This became one of our biggest nightmares. However, we learned from these mistakes and made the required corrections. It takes time for any organization to filter out unreliable people out of the organization and build a robust team.
Hawke Media created the Pop-Up Shop Initiative. What make it unique?
Marketing consultancies do not usually curate similar brands and enable them to share a single physical location by sharing the costs among them. Ours is not a retail shop. We are not also in a resale or wholesale model. We have just create a pop-up for a number of direct-to-customer brands, a majority of which are digital. This has helped small brands to step in and showcase what they have to offer. The model also brings benefits to the new brands as we are able to curate complementary brands at bring new customers to each brand.
What brands do you represent in the pop-up shop and how do they reach their clients directly?
We have a number of brands like Sweat Tailor, Wildfox, DSTLD, and Ridge Wallet among others. The op up shop has created an awesome mix of lifestyle and business for Abbott Kinney residents. They are so excited to be part of this initiative.
